So you thought Yummie! was all about cheap eats at
hawker stalls? Now let me do the review on Shashlik- the Russian restauraunt. The
first thing that stuck me was the totally Russian feel of the place. The fact that
this inconspicuous restauraunt is hidden away makes it a good rendezvous for spies and all
secret liasons alike. Furthermore, the decor is so subtle that one might even forget
it is a Russian restauraunt. The next thing that struck me was that the waiters were
mostly senior men who looked ready to give reliable advice should anything go wrong with
your date, dinner or both.
They have a set menu for lunch ($12) which is pretty good value for money. Saturday's
main course is sirlion steak, and it comes with soup, dessert and coffee/tea. It's
possible to switch the daily soup to
it's specialty Borsch soup - which is a beef and vegetable soup topped with whipped cream
if you're a regular enough customer to enjoy this privilege. It is rather
satisfying and comes well recommended. The steak comes in a very normal looking
plate, so don't
expect the hotplates which come with the a-la-carte and cost double the price. The
difference is that the set meal steak has less marinating than the a-la-carte version. So
if you're big for the beef taste the set won't let you down.
The dessert is a slice of seasonal fruit, but it appears that one can switch for
ice-cream, and this comes in a rather generous portion. The meal ends with coffee
which comes in a steel tea pot and a small expresso-like cup, very quaint. The
coffee is darn good, and the big pot it comes in would surely take that post-prandial
stupor away.
